About Us

The County Medical Society is a non-profit organization operated by and for the area physicians. It was founded by a group of area doctors in 1806 and has grown today to be a very prominent and well-respected organization. Unlike the State Medical Society (MSSNY), which represents a broader spectrum, the County Medical Society focuses on you as an individual.

The Medical Societies of the Counties of Oneida, Herkimer, Madison, Chenango, Oswego and Cayuga have been serving the needs of local physicians for almost 200 years. Today, over 500 physicians together comprise the membership of these medical societies.

The mission of the County Medical Society is to promote the science and art of medicine for the overall enhancement of local healthcare. The County Medical Society fulfills this mission by addressing local healthcare issues, cultivating and advancing medical education, and striving to maintain high standards within the medical profession to improve the level of medical service provided locally.

The County Medical Society works in conjunction with the Medical Society of the State of New York and the American Medical Association (AMA) which together provide representation at local, state and national levels of government.

Among the services provided by the County Medical Society is the credentials verification of physicians for the four area Oneida County hospitals, Little Falls Hospital in Herkimer County and Oneida Healthcare Center in Madison County at a reduced fee for Medical Society Members. The credentialing process allows the physician to obtain hospital staff membership and the process itself includes verification of the physician applicant's education, appropriate licenses, previous employment, etc.

Medical Society staff also processes initial and subsequent physician applications for a worker's compensation rating. This rating, when established, enables the physician to receive payment on worker's compensation claims.

Who is eligible to join the County Medical Society?

Like you, the members are doctors from this area. They are peers who share common interests, concerns and problems related to their practice and community. However, membership is restricted to only licensed medical doctors (M.D.) or doctors of osteopathy (D.O.).
